Vocal Coaching (VOICE 455)

Though not required, graduate students in Voice & Opera Performance will often enroll in this course each quarter with a faculty vocal coach. For questions, contact your Program Coordinator.

Vocal Solo Class

All graduate students registered for applied voice must register for VOICE 311, Vocal Solo Class (0 units), using the same section number as the studio teacher. Registration for VOICE 311 must be concurrent with every quarter of applied voice study. This class will be graded by the student’s applied voice teacher, [S] Satisfactory or [U] Unsatisfactory based on attendance, fulfilling the class performance requirement. Up to two excused absences per quarter are allowed for the 1:00 PM Monday class time. The student’s applied studio teacher must approve all absences for Vocal Solo Class.

Opera

Bienen School of Music opera productions are cast by audition. Students chosen for a role or a chorus part are asked to sign an agreement to state their acceptance. Opera rehearsals and preparation can be very time consuming. Before committing, students need to communicate any possible conflicts for rehearsals or performances and check with the Director of Opera if their participation in the opera will be possible.

Graduate Opera Workshop

(VOICE 452) will meet on Monday and Wednesday, 3:30 – 4:50pm, in one section:

  • FALL quarter is required for all first year Master’s students. It is optional for second year students with a permission number authorized by the Opera Director.
  • WINTER quarter, acting is required of and limited to first year Master’s students.
  • SPRING quarter is open to both first and second year Master’s Students.
  • All Master’s students are required to take 3 quarters of Opera Workshop (over two years) in order to graduate.
  • All Voice & Opera Performance majors are required to attend at least one performance of each opera production.

Juries

All first-year master’s candidates will sing one selection for the Voice and Opera Faculty during Wildcat Welcome and will offer a jury of three selections in the winter quarter of their first year of study. All second-year master’s candidates will offer a jury of three selections in their second fall quarter. All voice juries occur during exam week in the fall and winter quarters.

Jury Procedures

  1. Sign-ups are posted electronically in advance of juries. Students will receive an email with information about sign-ups.
  2. Jury comments are available for a student’s perusal on Canvas.
  3. A student may ask to postpone their jury because of illness or other emergencies. It is understood that the student will receive an incomplete grade for voice lessons from their studio teacher for that quarter until the jury is made up the following quarter. As with academic classes, an incomplete grade (X or Y) will be factored into the GPA as an “F” until the jury is made up.

Jury Examination Make-Up

A student who is unable to sing during the scheduled jury time must make-up the jury. Make-up juries must be scheduled with the Program Coordinator. All make-up juries will be heard on Mondays during the regular Voice & Opera Faculty meeting at 12:00 p.m. In the event a student cannot sing during that hour, the studio teacher will arrange for a make-up jury to be held at an alternate time. All Voice & Opera Faculty must be invited and at least three Voice & Opera Faculty must hear the make-up jury, including the studio teacher and two others.

Recitals

To complete the Master of Music in Voice & Opera Performance, one full-length recital is required.

See below for detailed voice recital guidelines for master's student. (Note: non-required recitals do not require recital permission. Students performing non-required recitals are also required to follow proper protocol for the campus venue for these recitals.)
