NOTE: All Marketing office staff begin as Marketing Assistants and advance by specializing in copywriting and/or graphic design through training and demonstration of acquired skills. Photographers advance through demonstration of skill, receiving wage increases and priority in concert assignments.

Marketing Assistant

Wage: Base: $14/hr.; Maximum: $14.05/hour (without specialization); Work-Study required

Supervisor: Marketing Coordinator

Functions: Support and assist with the creation and distribution of Concert Management Office promotional materials

Location: In-person shifts at Northwestern's Evanston Campus, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive

Hours: Approximately 4–8 hours per week during business hours. Schedule is based upon student's availability and will be formulated on a quarterly basis with the supervisor. Flexibility is allowed, provided deadlines are met.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with brochure and poster distribution on campus and in downtown Evanston
  2. Create and manage event listings on Northwestern’s university-wide online event calendar, PlanIt Purple
  3. Resize high-res photos for use on website, PlanIt Purple, and social media
  4. Assist with preparation and assembly of mailings
  5. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  1. Strong attention to detail
  2. Accuracy in proofreading and editing
  3. Ability to manage time and meet deadlines while working on concurrent projects is critical
  4. Background in classical/jazz music preferred
  5. Familiarity with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop software helpful
  6. Applicants with experience in reporting, copywriting, page layout, design, or art preferred

Graphic Designer

Wage: Base: $14.15/hr.; Maximum: $15.55/hour; Work-Study required

Functions: Design and create Concert Management Office promotional materials, including calendars, concert posters, ads, flyers, and program inserts using Adobe Creative Suite programs

Additional Responsibilities Include:

  1. Research themes and history of concert program repertoire to inform design choices.
  2. Design and manipulate graphics, scanned images, and other visuals
  3. Maintain Bienen School and Concerts@Bienen branding with use of designated logos, fonts, etc. in design projects
  4. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  1. Proven success managing time and meeting deadlines while working on concurrent projects as Marketing Assistant
  2. Comprehension of basic principles of design, including alignment, hierarchy, contrast, proximity, color, space, and balance
  3. Strong knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop software

Copywriter

Wage: Base: $14.15/hr.; Maximum: $15.55/hour; Work-Study required

Functions: Write and edit copy for publicity materials, primarily for use in social media, but including and not limited to print ads, brochures, press releases, radio spots, e-blasts, and event calendars, according to Chicago and AP style

Responsibilities:

  1. Research themes and history of concert program repertoire to identify and frame a “hook” for social media, e-blasts, and other materials
  2. Accurately proofread and fact-check all materials
  3. Update student recital listings on Northwestern’s university-wide online event calendar, PlanIt Purple
  4. Research audience development opportunities and produce audience development letters for local schools

Qualifications:

  1. Excellent knowledge of grammar and basic writing techniques
  2. Accuracy in proofreading and editing

Photographer

Wage: Base: $14/hour; Maximum: $15.95/hour

Supervisor: Marketing Coordinator

Functions: Photograph Bienen School of Music concerts and events for social media, website, marketing collateral, and archives. Edit photos using Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, or similar. Deliver edited photos to Marketing Coordinator and Marketing Manager within three days of a shift.

Hours: Concerts generally occur in the evenings and on weekends. Evening flexibility is a must for this position. Photographer is responsible for shooting between three and five concerts per quarter, more if desired.

Dress: Photographers are expected to present themselves in a professional manner and wear clean, professional clothing while working concert shifts. All black is suggested.

Responsibilities:

  1. Take high-quality photographs of performers during concerts and occasional rehearsals, following all guidelines set forth by the marketing department (including professional dress, use of camera muffler, and location guidelines)
  2. Maintain awareness of surroundings and stay out of sightlines to avoid disturbing patrons
  3. Respond to changes in music, taking photographs discreetly (e.g. at moments when shutter click is least audible)
  4. Format photographs for uploading to the Concert Management Office marketing database and online archive.
  5. Communicate with marketing staff to create a work schedule to which photographers are able to fully commit.

Qualifications:

  1. Proven experience with digital photography and photo-editing (equipment not required*)
  2. Dependability in this role is essential.
  3. Ability to communicate quickly and proactively
  4. Ability to meet deadlines
  5. Ability to exercise discretion when interacting with unhappy patrons
  6. Some experience with classical and/or jazz music helpful, but not required
  7. Applicants with photography portfolios preferred

*NOTE: Photography equipment can be borrowed from Concert Management Office if needed; Photo-editing software is also available on office computers.
