Students are expected to attend all sessions of courses and ensembles for which they are registered.
It is the responsibility of students enrolled in the Bienen School of Music to acquaint themselves and comply with the attendance policy of their program, classes, and ensembles. Performance activities such as auditions, special rehearsals or concerts, and special travel for off-campus performance opportunities are not an automatic excuse for non-attendance. When one-time conflicts arise with a scheduled course or rehearsal, the student’s attendance obligation for the scheduled course or rehearsal takes precedence. Students may work with professors to find solutions to any schedule conflicts, but the professor of the scheduled class has the right to uphold the attendance policy listed on the course syllabus. For exceptional circumstances, contact Bienen Graduate Services.
Final Exams
Students must arrange their schedules to avoid final exam conflicts. Instructors are not obligated to make special arrangements for students with scheduling conflicts of any kind. Students are expected to attend their final exams as scheduled by the Registrar; see the Final Exam Schedule. Exam deficiencies must be made up within three quarters following the missed exam or credit is forfeited.
Outside Professional Opportunities
Students might have outside professional opportunities which directly interfere with curricular responsibilities. Prior to engaging in these opportunities, students must request permission from the applicable instructor(s). This policy applies to all student activities, including classes, rehearsals, performances, and graduate assistantship responsibilities or shifts. If the student is missing two or more sessions of the same course, the student must complete the Short-Term Absence Request Form, and collect the required signatures from faculty prior to receiving approval from the Assistant Dean for Admission, Financial Aid and Graduate Services.
