The Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University announces the return of its Master of Music degree in collaborative piano and welcomes applications for fall 2026.

The program is designed for graduate-level pianists with a strong interest in the art of musical partnership—whether in art song, chamber music, opera, or instrumental collaboration.

“This degree reflects our deep commitment to preparing students for the dynamic and multifaceted careers available to collaborative pianists today,” says Yasuko Oura, director of the collaborative piano program. “We are proud to offer each student a path that is uniquely tailored to their individual goals and artistic strengths.”

Under the guidance of distinguished faculty and in close partnership with Bienen’s renowned voice and opera, string, and wind programs, students engage in rigorous training that prepares them for versatile careers as collaborative artists. An intentionally small cohort affords students close mentorship by a team of renowned faculty who are active leaders in their fields.

The curriculum includes weekly performance classes, private instruction, and specialized coachings, allowing students to build fluency in both instrumental and vocal collaboration. Students benefit from extensive performance opportunities with artists across the Bienen School, supporting an environment rich in cross-disciplinary learning and artistic exploration.

Located just outside Chicago—home to one of the most dynamic and diverse musical scenes in the country—Bienen’s immersive program offers students access to a wide range of professional experiences. Opportunities include observing and participating in rehearsals with professional opera companies, chamber ensembles, and choral groups, as well as assistantships, studio partnerships, and performance collaborations.

“This program emphasizes artistry, versatility, and professionalism, ensuring graduates are well-equipped to meet the demands of today’s musical landscape,” says Oura. “We are thrilled to welcome the next generation of collaborative pianists into our dynamic and supportive community.”

Applications are due December 1. See below for more information.
