Program Requirements

Master of Music: Collaborative Piano

Prescreening required; must be video format. Hands should be visible in video. Prescreening repertoire can be separated into different video files or uploaded in a single video file.

Fall 2026 Audition Dates:

February 9, 14-15

For Prescreening:

  • two contrasting art songs
  • one movement of an instrumental sonata

For Final Audition:

An applicant may bring their own partner, or a partner will be provided.

  1. Three art songs—choose one song from each category: 
    1. Schubert: "Ganymed" (A-flat major) or Robert Schumann: "Mondnacht," Op. 39 No. 5 (E major)
    2. Debussy: "Il pleure dans mon coeur" or “Green” from Ariettes oubliées
    3. Barber: "St. Ita’s Vision" (original key) from Hermit Songs, Op.29
  2. One Classical instrumental sonata (complete):
    1. Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 7 in C minor, Op. 30 No. 2
    2. Beethoven: Cello Sonata No. 3 in A Major, Op. 69 
    3. Mozart: Violin Sonata in B-flat major, K. 454
    4. A Classical instrumental sonata of equal difficulty may be substituted with advance notice to Dr. Oura, chair of collaborative piano.
  3. One movement of a Romantic sonata:
    1. Brahms: Violin Sonata in A Major, Op.100, 1st movement
    2. Brahms: Violin Sonata in D minor, Op. 108, 1st movement
    3. Brahms: Violin Sonata in G Major, Op. 78, 1st movement
    4. A movement from a different Romantic sonata of equal difficulty may be substituted with advance notice to Dr. Oura.
  4.  One concerto excerpt:
    1. Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35, 1st Movement, mm. 1-23 and 127-160
  5. One Mozart recitativo:
    1. One (preferably secco) recitativo (of any length, minimum one page) from any Mozart opera to be played and sung at the same time by the applicant in the original language. Applicant will play and sing all parts and will be judged on coordination ability, not on vocal quality or vocal technical accomplishment.
