Derrick Gardner, conductor
William James "Count" Basie was an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. Forming the Count Basie Orchestra in 1935, he led the group for nearly 50 years, cementing its reputation as one of the world’s most prominent jazz orchestras. Since Basie’s death in 1984, the Count Basie Orchestra has maintained its revered status both in performances and recordings, winning a Grammy Award as recently as 2023 for their album “Basie Swings the Blues.” The Northwestern University Jazz Orchestra spends the evening celebrating the jazz legend and his music.
