Audition & Program Requirements

Master of Music: Clarinet

Fall 2022 audition format update: Auditions will be entirely virtual. Clarinet applicants should submit audition repertoire recordings by February 15. Audition recordings must be submitted via the applicant's status portal. There may be Zoom interviews in late February after recorded auditions have been evaluated. Posted 1/13/22

Prescreening required; must be video recording.

For Prescreening:

Note: Brahms sonatas will not be accepted.

  • #13 from Rose 40 Studies for Clarinet and étude #5 or #11 from Rose 32 Études for Clarinet 
  • First movement from a concerto by Mozart, Copland, or Nielsen || NOTE: Faculty strongly prefer that applicants submit this prescreening element with pre-recorded or live accompaniment. Accompaniment tracks are available via NomadPlay and YouTube. 
  • One prepared piece of the applicant’s choice NOT listed above

For Final Audition:

Note: Brahms sonatas will not be accepted.

  • Entire concerto by Mozart, Copland, or Nielsen ||  NOTE: Faculty strongly prefer that applicants  utilize pre-recorded or live accompaniment for this virtual audition element. 
  • Minimum of two contrasting major pieces from the standard clarinet repertoire NOT listed above
  • Required Orchestral Excerpts:
    • Puccini, Tosca, Act 3 solo 
    • Kodály, Dances of Galánta, 2nd solo
    • Stravinsky, The Firebird, entire Variations movement
    • Mendelssohn, A Midsummer's Night Dream, scherzo 
    • One additional excerpt of the applicant's choice
