Audition & Program Requirements

Master of Music: Clarinet

Prescreening required; must be video recording.

Note: Updates to prescreening and audition requirements regarding the concerto, orchestral excerpts, and sightreading were made on 10/6/20. Please see information below.

For Prescreening:

Note: All sonatas by Brahms will not be accepted.

  • #13 from Rose 40 Studies for Clarinet and étude #5 or #11 from Rose 32 Études for Clarinet 
  • First movement from a concerto by Mozart, Copland, or Nielsen || NOTE: Faculty strongly prefer that applicants submit this prescreening element with pre-recorded or live accompaniment. Accompaniment tracks are available via NomadPlay and YouTube. 
  • One prepared piece of the applicant’s choice NOT listed above

For Final Audition*:

Note: All sonatas by Brahms will not be accepted.

  • Entire concerto by Mozart, Copland, or Nielsen ||  NOTE: Faculty strongly prefer that applicants  utilize pre-recorded or live accompaniment for this virtual audition element. 
  • Minimum of two contrasting major pieces from the standard clarinet repertoire NOT listed above
  • Required Orchestral Excerpts:
    • Puccini, Tosca, Act 3 solo 
    • Kodály, Dances of Galánta, 2nd solo
    • Stravinsky, The Firebird, entire Variations movement
    • Mendelssohn, A Midsummer's Night Dream, scherzo 
    • One additional excerpt of the applicant's choice 

*NOTE: Fall 2021 clarinet auditions must be entirely prerecorded and there will not be any live virtual auditions. Further information will be sent directly to applicants.
