A Tribute to the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band

Galvin Recital Hall
Derrick Gardner, conductor
John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie began his career playing trumpet in swing bands; however, he quickly emerged as a pivotal figure in the evolution of bebop, a more rapid and intricate style of jazz. He worked alongside Charlie Parker, creating groundbreaking and iconic bebop recordings that solidified bebop as a contemporary approach to composition and improvisation in the jazz genre. His virtuosic and innovative trumpet playing, as well as his iconic pouched cheeks and bent trumpet, solidified his legacy as one of the greatest jazz artists of all time.
