Jinjoo Cho and Min-Jeong Koh, violin; Max Geissler, cello
Bienen School associate professor of violin Jinjoo Cho and special guests present a recital serving as the centerpiece for a week-long colloquium on 20th-century American composer George Rochberg’s music titled Love and Grief. Rochberg’s compositional style transformed dramatically following the death of his teenage son, provoking controversy among critics and his fellow composers. A top prizewinner in international competitions, Jinjoo Cho has performed at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Banff Centre and appeared with leading orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Deutsche Radio Philharmonic, and Seoul Philharmonic. She is joined by violinist Min-Jeong Koh (The Glenn Gould School at The Royal Conservatory) and cellist Max Geissler (Butler University) for a performance highlighting music of Anton Webern and George Rochberg. Prior to the recital, musicologists Amy Wlodarski (Dickinson University) and Ryan Dohoney (Northwestern University) and cellist Norman Fischer (Rice University) discuss the repertoire.
