The Other Side of the Slide—Honoring the Legacy of the Trombone

Thursday, May 29, 2025 at 7:30pm CDT
Galvin Recital Hall
Derrick Gardner, conductor; Vincent Gardner, trombone; Tammy McCann, vocalist
From Dixieland to swing to bebop and beyond, the trombone has played a critical role throughout the history of jazz. The Jazz Orchestra explores the legacy of the instrument with special guest Vincent Gardner. Director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra, Gardner has performed with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Bobby McFerrin, Harry Connick, Jr., the Saturday Night Live Band, Chaka Khan, and A Tribe Called Quest, among many others. Also joining the ensemble is guest vocalist Tammy McCann, Music Institute of Chicago Artist in Residence and praised by critic Howard Reich for “a voice that soars in all registers, at all tempos, on all occasions.” McCann has toured with Ray Charles and given performances at storied venues including Birdland, the Blue Note, and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola.
