Trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Thad Jones rose to fame as a member of the Count Basie Orchestra, where he was a featured soloist on such hit tunes as “April in Paris,” “Shiny Stockings,” and “Corner Pocket.” He also composed and arranged tracks including “The Deacon,” “H.R.H.” (Her Royal Highness), and “Counter Block.” In 1965, Jones and drummer Mel Lewis formed the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, and their regular performances at the Village Vanguard garnered widespread acclaim over the years that followed. Jones went on to become the leader of the Danish Radio Big Band in Copenhagen, later returning to the US to take up the leadership of the Count Basie Orchestra. The Jazz Orchestra celebrates Jones’ music and legacy.

Located in the Ryan Center for the Musical Arts, this 400-seat hall features a 40-foot glass wall offering views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. Undulating walls of Forest Stewardship Council–certified wood, covered with a thin layer of African moabi wood, provide optimal acoustics, and the hall is equipped with state-of-the-art sound and video equipment for recording.
