Good Vibes—The Art of the Jazz Vibraphone

Tuesday, May 12, 2026 at 7:30pm CDT

Galvin Recital Hall

Darius Hampton, conductor; Thaddeus Tukes, vibraphone

The Jazz Ensemble showcases the innovators of the jazz vibraphone with a program including music by Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, and Gary Burton. Bienen alumnus Thaddeus Tukes (‘16) joins the ensemble for this special performance. Named a 2024 Downbeat magazine “Rising Star,” Tukes “brings poetry to the vibraphone” (Chicago Tribune), captivating audiences at New York City’s Carnegie Hall, Chicago’s Symphony Center, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. He is the founder of the Chicago Freedom Ensemble and was selected to perform at the 2020 World’s Expo in Dubai. A teacher of percussion ensembles at elementary and high schools throughout Chicagoland, Tukes currently serves as director of Chicago’s Gallery 37 Center for the Arts After School Matters Jazz Band program.
