Tuesday, November 4, 2025 at 7:30pm CST

Galvin Recital Hall

Darius Hampton, conductor

Trumpeter, bandleader, and composer John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie was a leading figure in the development of bebop and a pioneer of Afro-Cuban jazz. His compositions, including such hits as “Groovin’ High,” “A Night in Tunisia,” and “Manteca,” have become legendary standards, and he was the recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Kennedy Center Honors Award. The Jazz Ensemble celebrates Gillespie’s legacy with a program of music from throughout his career.
