Contemporary Music Ensemble

Friday, March 6, 2020 at 7:30pm CST

Ryan Opera Theater

Alan Pierson and Ben Bolter, conductors; Oscar Bettison, guest composer

For their second winter concert, the Contemporary Music Ensemble performs two chamber works: Arnold Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 1 in E Major, Op. 9 and Oscar Bettison’s Livre des Sauvages. Completed in 1906, Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony represented a major step in his development as a composer, bridging the gap between traditional and modern musical forms. Bettison’s fantastical 2012 chamber concerto Livre des Sauvages was inspired by a 19th-century book of pictographs of unknown origin; its three movements depict mysterious beasts, alchemy, ships laden with treasure, and other arcana. The concert is the culmination of Bettison’s visit to the Bienen School, during which he coaches the ensemble and composition students.

Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with valid ID.
