For more than 70 years, Northwestern University's Music Academy has provided music instruction to children and adults from Evanston and the North Shore. The Academy serves as a laboratory for college students enrolled in piano and string teaching courses and is a member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts.
More than 400 community students participate each week in Kindermusik classes, piano, string and voice lessons. To make music study available to all children, financial aid and scholarships are available, as are outreach programs for the general community and "at-risk" children.
Teachers hold master's and doctoral degrees in music teaching and performance or the equivalent in teaching experience and training. Most instructors also teach in the Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music.
Students in the piano and string divisions have many opportunities to perform, including quarterly solo recitals. Kindermusik and Pre-Piano students share their music with parents and caregivers each week.
Families are welcome to observe music lessons and meet our instructors. Contact the coordinator in your area of interest to arrange a visit. The Academy director can also answer general questions related to music study and choice of instrument.
