Robert Sullivan was appointed Professor of Trumpet at Northwestern University in September 2013. Robert is former principal trumpet of the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops Orchestras, assistant principal trumpet of the Cleveland Orchestra, associate principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic, and has been a member of the Charleston (SC) Symphony, US Air Force Band and Chicago Chamber Brass.  He has served on the faculties of the Cleveland Institute of Music, Manhattan School of Music, Mannes College of Music, Charleston Southern University and the College of Charleston. Robert has presented master classes and recitals throughout the U.S., South America, Europe and Asia, and is a faculty member at the Brevard Music Center. Since moving to the Chicago area, Mr. Sullivan frequently performs with the Chicago Symphony, the Lyric Opera Orchestra of Chicago, and the Chicago Philharmonic. A native of Norwood, MA, Mr. Sullivan studied with Armando Ghitalla at the University of Michigan, where he received his B. Mus. (trumpet performance) and won the Armando Ghitalla fellowship to attend the Tanglewood Music Center in 1984.

Mr. Sullivan has appeared as soloist with several orchestras and wind ensembles, including the Chicago Philharmonic, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Pops, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Eastman Wind Ensemble. An active recitalist, Robert has commissioned several important American composers, including Eric Ewazen, Joseph Turin and James Stephenson. Robert’s first two solo albums with pianist James Rensink, Treasures for Trumpet and Kaleidoscope are available on the Summit Records label.  A new recording of works by contemporary American Composers is due for release Spring, 2017.

In 2000, Robert received a special citation from the Congress of the United States in recognition of community service.

Mr. Sullivan is the development artist for the Yamaha New York Artist Model Bb and C trumpets, and is a Yamaha performing artist.
