Derrick Gardner and Kevin Fort, conductors
Composer, pianist, keyboardist, and occasional percussionist Chick Corea was a 27-time Grammy Award winner and a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master. His compositions “Spain,” “500 Miles High,” “La Fiesta,” “Armando’s Rhumba,” and “Windows” are widely considered jazz standards. Derrick Gardner leads jazz studies students in arrangements showcasing the multitude of genres for which Corea was known. Pianist, composer, and bandleader Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington is considered one of the originators of big band jazz. Leading his Jazz Orchestra for over 50 years, Ellington wrote thousands of compositions, including jazz standards “Take the A Train,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” “Caravan,” “In a Sentimental Mood,” and “Sophisticated Lady.” Kevin Fort leads jazz studies students in arrangements of Ellington’s masterful compositions.
Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with valid ID.
