An audition is required for admission. Campus auditions
for NHSMI 2008 are March 14-15 and April 25-26. If you cannot arrange
an in-person audition, you may submit a high quality audio cassette or CD
recording.
- All auditions should be 10 to 15 minutes in length.
- Piano, voice, winds and percussion, guitar, and string auditions should consist of at least two pieces of serious repertoire demonstrating musical expression, technical ability, and tone quality.
- Jazz studies auditions should consist of three selections (one blues tune, one standard AABA form, and one jazz/rock, fusion, or Latin tune), including improvisation.
- Composition applicants must submit two or more compositions, with recordings whenever possible, in addition to the performance audition.
- Music education and conducting applicants must audition in one of the performance areas and submit an essay explaining their interest in the teaching profession and their musical leadership or conducting experience.
- Applications are due Monday, March 10, 2008, for early
decision and Friday, April 25, 2008, for regular decision. Late
applications may be allowed in certain areas; interested students should
contact the music admission office.

Room & Board
Music students live in University housing near the Music Administration Building, Regenstein Hall, and Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, where classrooms, studios, rehearsal halls, and practice rooms are located. Students are housed two per room, and the dormitory is supervised by resident counselors. Three meals are served daily Monday through Saturday; brunch and dinner are served on Sunday.
Financial Aid
Scholarships and financial aid are offered on the basis of ability and financial
need; students with limited financial resources are encouraged to apply to
the program. Students requesting financial assistance must complete and return
the financial aid section of the application form. Late applications may be
allowed in certain areas; interested students should contact the music admission
office.

Fees
The cost of attending the five-week National High School Music Institute for
Summer 2008 is $4,400, which includes tuition, room, board, health insurance,
and field trips. The cost for the two-week classical guitar program is $1,850.
There is also a nonrefundable application fee of $50.
Important Information for Admitted Students Only
If your application to the
National High School Music Institute has been successful and you have
received your official letter of admission, you will need to download ALL of
the following forms. Please read each of the forms thoroughly, as many of them
need to be returned to the NHSMI Office in order to enroll in our program.
The information found in these forms will also answer questions about what
to bring with you, travel arrangements, billing procedures, and concert schedules.
