NOTE: The information on this page is relevant only to students
who have been accepted into NHSMI.
Each NHSMI program will meet as a group on Sunday, June 29, in
the afternoon. These meetings are required and the time and location
of your program meeting will be provided to you upon check-in Sunday
morning.
Auditions for placement in the wind ensemble, choir, and jazz
groups will take place between 2:00 pm and 5:30 pm on Sunday,
June 29, for all students. Auditions for string instruments for
placement in orchestra will take place between 9:00 am and 1:00
pm on Monday, June 30. The purpose of these auditions is to determine
preliminary placement in ensembles, and/or to simply enable the
various professors to update themselves on the students’ progress since the
application auditions. Audition information and excerpts are posted
below. (Orchestral auditions for interested Winds and Percussion
students will take place during the first week of the Institute.)

ANOTHER NOTE: We encourage you to purchase your
own copy of these parts and transfer the markings that appear
in these documents to your own parts for the audition.

Jazz
All students interested in performing in a jazz combo will audition
on the first Sunday of the Institute, and combo assignments will
be made by Monday. Please purchase a copy of The
New Real Book,
if you do not have a copy already, and have prepared the following
selections from A or B:
- Oleo and All The Things You
Are from The New Real Book Vol.1,
plus Billie’s Bounce from Aebersold’s “All
Bird” play-along
(Vol.6); OR
- Oleo and Tenor Madness from Aebersold’s “Sonny
Rollins” play-along (Vol.8), plus a standard
of your choice (i.e. All The Things You Are, In
a Mellow Tone, They
Can’t
Take That Away from Me)
Voice
All voice students will be asked to vocalize and sing a prepared
solo of their choice (preferably from memory) for the NHSMI voice
faculty.
Piano
All piano students should be prepared to play a solo piece of your
choice and to sight-read.
Guitar
Guitar students will be assigned parts based on their original
NHSMI audition. No placement audition is required.
Composition
All students should prepare to audition for ensembles on their
primary instrument. Students who auditioned on piano or voice will
audition for choir.
Music Education
All students should prepare to audition for ensembles on their
primary instrument. Students who auditioned on piano or voice will
audition for choir.
