Music
Education & Conducting
Ryan Nelson, Coordinator
musiclife@northwestern.edu
Provides future educators with a glimpse of music education in the 21st century.
Students attend music education seminars emphasizing leadership, conducting
skills, rehearsal techniques, and classroom management. Composition, improvisation,
critical and creative thinking, and technology are the foundation of the
curriculum. Each student is offered the chance to assist in rehearsal preparation
and conducting for one of the ensembles performing in the gala finale concert
during the final week of the institute.

Private Instruction
As part of the required curriculum, students attend one-hour private lessons
weekly with our performance faculty. During this time students primarily address
technique, solo literature, and performance practice. Additionally, chamber
and ensemble literature may be coached. Private lessons are part of the standard
tuition charges and do not pose an additional expense.
