Marcos Balter (composition) saw the Chicago premiere of his composition "Portmanteaux" by the International Contemporary Ensemble in December. His work "delete/control/option," commissioned by the New Galery Concert Series, premiered in Boston in January and was presented at the Boston Conservatory's 2008 Hard Stuff New Music Festival; "insertspace" premiered by the New Millennium Orchestra at Chicago's Millennium Park in February. "Ut" for solo viola was performed by Nadia Sirota at the VIM-TriBeCa concert series in NYC, and by Dominic Johnson at the Lake Shore Chamber Music Series in Chicago. He also received a commission to write the compulsory work for the 2008 HAMS International Violin Competition in May.

David Cubek (conducting and ensembles) served as music director for an alternative production of Orphée (Gluck/Berlioz) last fall in Montreal.

Shawn Jaeger (composition) was one of nine winners in the 56th annual BMI Student Composer Awards. The award recognizes superior creative talent and winners receive scholarship grants to be applied toward their musical education. Music alum Gilbert Galindo (06) was also honored for the same award. Sergiy Komirenko (piano), a student of James Giles, took first prize in the Music Teachers National Association East Central Regional competition.

Joshua Moshier (composition) was invited to present his composition "Who Shall Excel Them?" at the 2008 International Jazz Composers Symposium in Tampa, FL.

Johnny Salinas, Sean Hurlburt, Luke Gay, and Zachary Pfau (all saxophone), under their ensemble moniker the Amethyst Quartet, were Gold Medal Winners at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, which was held on the campus of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN. The same quartet also won the Coleman-Saunderson Prize for Woodwinds and Brass at the 62nd Annual Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition in Pasadena, CA. They were also national winners of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Collegiate Chamber Music Competition, held in Denver, CO. Nikolas Wenzel (voice and opera) was selected to sing the National Anthem at
as part of the festivities at "Northwestern University Day" at Wrigley Field in May.
