Summer 2009 Music Calendar
EVANSTON, Ill. --- The Northwestern University Henry and Leigh
Bienen School of Music’s Summer 2009 highlights include
recitals by faculty tubist Rex Martin (July 13) and Chicago Symphony
Orchestra guest tubist Gene Pokorny (July 14) and faculty trombonist
Michael Mulcahy (July 20), as well as concerts by the Summer
Band (July 1, July 15 and July 29).
Beginning June 30, the National High School Music Institute
(NHSMI), an integral part of the Bienen School of Music, offers
students an intimate look at collegiate-level music study and
music as a career and the opportunity to work with Northwestern
music faculty. These outstanding young musicians will perform
throughout the summer as soloists and in large and small ensembles.
More information on the NHSMI summer events is featured below.

NHSMI Faculty Musicale, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday,
June 30, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Admission is free.
JULY 2009 MUSIC EVENTS
Northwestern University Summer Band, 7
p.m. Wednesday, July 1, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Bienen School
of Music faculty member Ryan T. Nelson will conduct the Summer
Band in a program including Mark Camphouse’s “Yosemite Autumn,” Eric
Whitacre’s “Lux Aurumque,” Roger Cichy’s
Divertimento for Winds and Percussion and Travis Cross’ “Rizzendo.” Tickets
are $7 for the general public; $5 for senior citizens and Northwestern
faculty and staff; and $4 for full-time students.
NHSMI Ravinia Steans Institute Chamber
Concert, 7:30 p.m. Monday,
July 6, Lutkin Hall. Each summer, the Ravinia Festival’s
Steans Institute invites young artists from around the world
to study with its stellar faculty. In cooperation with Northwestern’s
National High School Music Institute, the Steans Institute brings
several of these budding virtuosos to perform at Northwestern.
Admission is free.
Northwestern University Summer Orchestra, 7:30 p.m. Friday,
July 10, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Bienen School of Music faculty
member Robert G. Hasty will conduct the Summer Orchestra in a
program featuring a special performance by pianist Hsiao-Ling
Lin. The program will include Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto
in A Minor and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in
D Minor. Tickets are $7 for the general public; $5 for senior
citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $4 for full-time
students.
NHSMI Guitar Recital, 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 10, Lutkin Hall.
Admission is free.
NHSMI Choir, Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. Saturday,
July 11, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Erin Freeman, Philip Peters
and Daniel J. Farris will conduct the choir, orchestra and wind
ensemble. Choral works will include Sergei Rachmaninoff’s
Six Choruses for Female Voices and Piano; Igor Stravinsky’s “Ave
Maria”; Carlo Gesualdo’s “Moro, lasso, al mio
duolo”; Paul Hindemith’s “Puisque tout passe” from “Six
Chansons”; and Giuseppe Verdi’s “Va Pensiero” from “Nabucco” and “Brindisi” from “La
Traviata.” The orchestra will perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s
Overture to “Egmont” and Johannes Brahms’ Finale
to Symphony No. 1 in C Minor. The wind ensemble will perform
Kenneth Hesketh’s “Masque” and Howard Hanson’s “Laude.” Admission
is free.
NHSMI Solo and Chamber Recital, 3 p.m. Sunday, July 12, Lutkin
Hall. Admission is free.
Faculty Recital, Rex Martin, tuba, 7 p.m. Monday, July 13, Regenstein
Recital Hall. Tuba virtuoso and Northwestern brass professor
Rex Martin can be heard in more than 70 symphony orchestra recordings.
He has given recitals and master classes all over the world,
including his biannual series of master classes in Castagneto
Carducci, Italy. Admission is free.
NHSMI String Faculty Recital, 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 13, Lutkin
Hall. The program includes Dvorak’s String Quintet No.
2 in G Major and other works. Admission is free.
Guest Artist, Gene Pokorny, tuba, 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, Regenstein
Recital Hall. Tuba virtuoso Gene Pokorny holds the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra’s Arnold Jacobs Principal Tuba Chair. Appointed
to the position by Sir Georg Solti in 1988, Pokorny has also
played in the Israel Philharmonic, Utah Symphony, St. Louis Symphony
and Los Angeles Philharmonic. Admission is free.
Northwestern University Summer Band, 7 p.m. Wednesday, July
15, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Bienen School of Music faculty
member Daniel J. Farris will conduct the Summer Band in a program
that includes Warren Barker’s arrangement of George Gershwin’s “The
Symphonic Gershwin,” Frank Ticheli’s “Simple
Gifts” and Dwayne Milburn’s “American Hymnsong
Suite.” Tickets are $7 for the general public; $5 for senior
citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $4 for full-time
students.
NHSMI Orchestra and Honors Chamber Ensembles, 7:30 p.m. Saturday,
July 18, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Philip Peters will conduct
the NHSMI Orchestra and Honors Chamber Ensemble in a performance
of Lucas Drew’s arrangement of Peter Tchaikovsky’s “Souvenir
de Florence.” Admission is free.
NHSMI Solo and Chamber Recital, 3 p.m. Sunday, July 19, Lutkin
Hall. Admission is free.
Faculty Recital, Michael Mulcahy, trombone, 6 p.m. Monday, July
20, Regenstein Recital Hall. A member of the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra (CSO) since his appointment by Sir Georg Solti in 1989,
trombonist Michael Mulcahy has appeared as soloist and teacher
in the United States, Canada, Russia, Japan, Argentina, New Zealand,
Australia and Europe, including solo appearances with the CSO,
the Bavarian Radio Symphony, the Hilversum Radio Symphony and
the Melbourne Symphony. Also an active member of the Chicago
Chamber Musicians, he has collaborated with artists Pierre Boulez,
Joseph Silverstein, Christoph Eschenbach, William Bolcom and
Yo-Yo Ma. Mulcahy is principal trombone of Chicago’s Music
of the Baroque and the Grand Teton Music Festival. Admission
is free.
NHSMI Solo and Chamber Recital, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21,
Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.
Northshore Concert Band, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, Pick-Staiger
Concert Hall. Bienen School of Music faculty member Daniel J.
Farris will conduct the Northshore Concert Band, a symphonic
band that performs throughout the Chicago metropolitan area,
in an evening of band classics and march favorites. With its
rich 50-year history, the ensemble has become internationally
known and respected for its musical excellence, leadership in
community music and service to musical education. Tickets are
$7 for the general public; $5 for senior citizens and Northwestern
faculty and staff; and $4 for full-time students.
NHSMI Jazz Combos with Northwestern University
Summer Jazz Band,
7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 23, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Bienen
School of Music faculty member and NHSMI jazz program coordinator
Chris Madsen will conduct NHSMI jazz combos in a performance
with the Summer Jazz Band. Admission is free.
Northwestern University Summer Jazz Band, 7:30 p.m. Friday,
July 24, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Bienen School of Music faculty
member Chris Madsen will conduct the Summer Jazz Band in this

NHSMI Wind Ensemble and Honors Chamber

Saturday, July 25, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Daniel J. Farris,
Bienen School of Music faculty member, will conduct the NHSMI
Wind Ensemble and Honors Chamber Ensembles in a program featuring
David Diamond’s “Hearts Music” and Darius Milhaud’s “Suite

Northwestern University Summer Chorus, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July
26, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Bienen School of Music faculty
member Robert A. Harris will conduct the Summer Chorus in a program
featuring Johannes Brahms’ “Gypsy Songs” and
Heinz Werner Zimmermann’s “Psalm Concert.” Tickets

program featuring performances by violist Kristin Figard and
double bassist David Ballam. The program will include Carl Ditters
von Dittersdorf’s Sinfonia Concertante in D Major for Viola
and Double Bass and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No.
3 in E-flat Major (“Eroica”). Tickets are $7 for

29, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. School of Music faculty member
Mallory Thompson will conduct the Summer Band in a program featuring
a performance by percussionist Christopher Riggs. The program
will include Paul Lavender’s arrangement of John Williams’ “Sound
the Bells,” Pierre La Plante’s “In the Forest
of the King” and Ronald Lo Presti’s “Elegy
for a Young American.” Hugh Stuart’s “Three
Ayres from Gloucester,” Rudolf Bodingbauer’s “Xylophonia,” Michael
Daugherty’s “Alligator Alley,” Kenneth Alford’s “Colonel
Bogey” and John Philip Sousa’s “The Washington
Post” (ed. Frederick Fennell) will also be performed. Tickets

Alice Parker’s arrangement of “Hark, I Hear the Harps
Eternal,” selections from Johannes Brahms’ “Liebeslieder
Waltzes” and Charles Villiers Stanford’s “Beati
Quorum Via.” The orchestra will perform Bedrich Smetana’s “The
Moldau” and the wind ensemble will perform Percy Grainger’s “Lincolnshire
Posy.” Admission is free.
