Stephen HoughEvanston -- British-born pianist Stephen Hough will be in residence at the Bienen School of Music from November 10 to 14 as the 2008 winner of the Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano Performance.  His activities will include two piano master classes, a public recital, and two classes for pianists on career issues and performance practice.

Stephen Hough is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive pianists of his generation. His more than 40 CDs have garnered such international awards as Gramophone magazine’s Record of the Year (1996, 2003) and Golden Disc (2008), the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, Diapason d'Or, and several Grammy nominations. Since winning First Prize in the 1983 Naumburg International Piano Competition, he has appeared with almost every major orchestra and at such festivals as Ravinia, Salzburg, and the BBC Proms.  As a chamber musician he has collaborated with Joshua Bell, the Emerson, Takacs and Juilliard String Quartets, and many other noted artists.  Among the many distinguished composers who have written especially for him are George Tsontakis, Lowell Liebermann, and James MacMillan.
