November 2008 Music Calendar
EVANSTON, Ill. --- The Northwestern University Henry and Leigh
Bienen School of Music’s November 2008 highlights include
two master classes (Nov. 10 and 11), a performance practices
class (Nov. 12), a performance by guest artist and award-winning
pianist Stephen Hough (Nov. 13) and a concert featuring the
works of great British composers by the Philharmonia (Nov.
23).
November events also include a concert featuring all of Northwestern’s
choral ensembles (Nov. 8), a free performance of select opera
scenes by graduate students from the Voice and Opera Program
(Nov. 15) and a concert by the visiting International Contemporary
Ensemble (Nov. 20).
Northwestern’s newly appointed Director of Jazz Studies
Victor Goines will conduct the Northwestern University Jazz
Orchestra performance Nov. 12.
Events listed below are open to the public and will be held
on Northwestern’s Evanston campus at Pick-Staiger Concert
Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive; Regenstein Recital Hall, 60 Arts

November 2008 Music Events
Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra, “Dancing
with the Orchestra,” 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, Pick-Staiger
Concert Hall. Robert G. Hasty will conduct the Chamber Orchestra
in a program featuring Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suite (Overture)
No. 1 in C Major, Igor Stravinsky’s “Danse Concertante” and
W.A. Mozart’s Symphony No. 36 in C Major (“Linz”).
Tickets are $7 for the general public; $5 for senior citizens
and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $4 for full-time students.
Kids Fare, “Not in Kansas Anymore: Music from ‘The
Wizard of Oz,’” 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, Pick-Staiger
Concert Hall. The cast of Northwestern’s 67th annual Dolphin
Show will perform familiar songs in costume from this legendary
story. The hourlong family concert is geared for children aged
3 to 8. Tickets are $6 for adults; $5 for senior citizens and
Northwestern faculty and staff; and $4 for children.
NU Voices, “A Choral Showcase,” 7:30 p.m. Saturday,
Nov. 8, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. This concert will feature
all of Northwestern’s choral ensembles: University Chorale,
University Singers, University Chorus, University Women’s
Chorus and the Alice Millar Chapel Choir, conducted by Robert
A. Harris, Amy G. Weller, Stephen Alltop and Mollie Stone. Tickets
are $12 for the general public; $9 for senior citizens and Northwestern
faculty and staff; and $6 for full-time students.
Baroque Music Ensemble, “Italian Glories,” 7 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 9, Alice Millar Chapel. Stephen Alltop will conduct
members of the Baroque Music Ensemble in the North American
premiere of Egidio Duni’s “Nerone” (1735),
credited as the first Italian comic opera. Antonio Vivaldi’s
violin Concerto in C Major and Baldassare Galuppi’s “Lauda
Jerusalem” for solo voices, chamber choir and orchestra
are also on the program. Tickets are $7 for the general public;
$5 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and
$4 for full-time students.
Percussion Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, Pick-Staiger
Concert Hall. She-e Wu, the Bienen School of Music’s new
director of percussion and associate professor of music will
conduct the Percussion Ensemble concert. A featured artist at
percussion conventions around the world, she has also performed
at prestigious colleges, universities and percussion events
through the United States and abroad. Tickets are $7 for the
general public; $5 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty
and staff; and $4 for full-time students.
Faculty Recital with Guest Artists, Trio
Cayenne (Steven Cohen and Friends), 7:30 p.m. Tuesday,
Nov. 11, Regenstein Recital Hall. Faculty clarinetist Steven
Cohen will be joined on stage by oboist Mark Ostoich and bassoonist
William Ludwig. The program features Jean Francaix’s
Divertissement, Oubradous’ arrangement
of W.A. Mozart’s Divertimento No. 4, Alexandre Tansman’s “Suite
pour Trio D’Anches” and Erwin Schulhoff’s “Divertissement.” Tickets
are $9 for the general public; $7 for senior citizens and Northwestern
faculty and staff; and $5 for full-time students.
Northwestern University Jazz Orchestra, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday,
Nov. 12, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Northwestern’s newly
appointed director of jazz studies and professor of music Victor
Goines will conduct the University’s Jazz Orchestra. Goines
has been a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and
the Wynton Marsalis Septet since 1993. With these legendary
ensembles he has toured worldwide and has performed on more
than 20 recordings, including Marsalis’ Pulitzer Prize–winning “Blood
on the Fields,” Jazz at Lincoln Center’s “Congo
Square” and the soundtracks for three Ken Burns documentaries.
Also a renowned solo artist, Goines has made seven recordings
with his own quartet and quintet. Also active as a jazz educator,
Goines was artistic director of the Juilliard School’s
jazz studies program for seven years. Tickets are $7 for the
general public; $5 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty
and staff; and $4 for full-time students.
Stephen Hough, piano master class, 7 to 10 p.m. Monday, Nov.
10, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, and 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov.
11, in Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

Guest Artist, Stephen Hough, piano, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov.
13, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. British pianist Stephen Hough
is the 2008 winner of the Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano Performance,
a biennial Bienen School of Music award honoring pianists who
have achieved the highest levels of national and international
recognition. Widely regarded as one of the most distinctive
pianists of his generation, Hough integrates technique and imagination
with scholarship and intellectual rigor. His more than 40 CDs
on the Hyperion label have garnered numerous international honors,
including Gramophone magazine’s 1996 and 2003 Record of
the Year, the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis, the Diapason d’Or,
Le Monde de la Musique and several Grammy nominations. Since
winning the 1983 Naumburg International Piano Competition, Hough
has appeared with almost every major American and European orchestra.
He was also the recipient of a 2001 MacArthur Fellowship. Tickets
are $22 for the general public; $20 for senior citizens and
Northwestern faculty and staff; and $10 for full-time students.
Symphonic Wind Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, Pick-Staiger
Concert Hall. Music faculty member Mallory Thompson will conduct
the University’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble in a program
that includes Richard Strauss’ Serenade in E-flat; Boyd
and Votta’s arrangement of Richard Wagner’s “Trauermusik,” Bernard
Rands’ “Ceremonial,” Bright Sheng’s “L’AI” (“Love
Song”) and Joseph Schwantner’s “...and the
mountains rising nowhere.” Tickets are $7 for the general
public; $5 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and
staff; and $4 for full-time students.
An Evening of Opera Scenes, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, Lutkin
Hall. The Bienen School of Music’s new Director of Opera
Jay Lesenger will direct graduate students from the voice and
opera program in a performance of scenes from celebrated operas.
Admission is free.
Evening of Brass, “400 years of Masterworks for
Brass Ensemble,” 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, Pick-Staiger Concert
Hall. Gail Williams and Gerard Morris will conduct the Brass
Ensemble during this program. Tickets are $7 for the general
public; $5 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and
staff; and $4 for full-tme students.
International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), 7:30 p.m. Thursday,
Nov. 20, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The International Contemporary
Ensemble (ICE) is a chamber ensemble of emerging performers
and composers who are dedicated to advancing contemporary music.
Through innovative programming, multimedia collaborations, commissions
for young composers and performances in nontraditional venues,
ICE brings together new music and new audiences. Tickets are
$7 for the general public; $5 for senior citizens and Northwestern
faculty and staff; and $4 for full-time students.
Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra, “Russian
Treasures,” 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, Pick-Staiger
Concert Hall. Victor Yampolsky will conduct the Symphony Orchestra
in a concert featuring student pianist Geraldine Ong, a 2008
Northwestern Concerto/Aria Competition winner. The program will
include Yuri Falik’s “Symphonic Etudes,” Sergei
Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor and Sergei
Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 3 in C Minor. Tickets are $9
for the general public; $7 for senior citizens and Northwestern
faculty and staff; and $5 for full-time students.
Women’s Chorus, 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, Lutkin Hall.
Mollie Stone will conduct the Women’s Chorus in a program
of choral music from various periods and genres, composed for
treble voices. Tickets are $7 for the general public; $5 for
senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $4 for
full-time students.
Philharmonia, “Great British Composers,” 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 23, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Bienen School of
Music faculty member Robert G. Hasty will conduct the Philharmonia
in a concert narrated by his faculty colleague Bernard J. Dobroski.
The program will include William Walton’s “Crown
Imperial” (“Coronation March”), Benjamin Britten’s “Young
Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” (“Variations
and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell”), Eric Coates’ “London
Suite” (“London Every Day”) and Edward Elgar’s “The
Wand of Youth Suite” and “Pomp and Circumstance,
Military March No. 1 in D Major.” Tickets are $7 for the
general public; $5 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty
and staff; and $4 for full-time students.
Contemporary Music Ensemble, “Concertinis,” 7:30
p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Bienen School
of Music faculty member Ryan T. Nelson will conduct the Contemporary
Music Ensemble in a program featuring Lei Liang’s “Brush
Stroke,” Lee Hyla’s “Amnesia Variance” and
the U.S. premiere of Helmut Lachenmann’s “Concertini.” Tickets
are $7 for the general public; $5 for senior citizens and Northwestern
faculty and staff; and $4 for full-time students.
