Northwestern Hosts Guest Artists This Spring
April 1 - May 7
EVANSTON, Ill. --- The Northwestern University School of Music
will host master classes by internationally renowned performers,
a distinguished military band, and several Segovia Classical
Guitar Series artists during the Spring 2008 concert season.
The concerts by these and other guest artists will begin April
1 and run through May 7.
All the programs are open to the public and will take place
on the Evanston campus at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts
Circle Drive; Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place; or Regenstein
Recital Hall, 60 Arts Circle Drive, as noted below.
American baritone Mark Delavan is a company member of the New
York City Opera. He has appeared with the Metropolitan Opera
and Chicago’s Lyric Opera. Delavan will present an opera
master class for pre-selected Northwestern voice students at
7 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at Lutkin Hall. Tickets are $7 for the
general public; $5 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty
and staff; and $4 for students.
Richard Goode, inaugural winner of Northwestern’s Jean
Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano Performance, has appeared with major
American and European orchestras and in recitals at New York’s
Carnegie Hall, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, London’s
Barbican Centre and Queen Elizabeth Hall, and Austria’s
Salzburg Festival. During his spring 2008 residency at Northwestern,
he will coach School of Music students during three consecutive
days of special events. Goode will present a a vocal master class
at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Lutkin Hall; and a piano master
class at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Pick-Staiger Concert
Hall. Both master classes are free. (Editors note: The April
9 vocal master class will be made available on the Internet via
live streaming video. It also will be streamed live on the Web
via Internet 2, for those institutions that have access.)
Goode will conduct a lecture-demonstration at 7:30 p.m. Thursday,
April 10, in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Tickets to the March
10 event are $7 for the general public; $5 for senior citizens
and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $4 for students. (ALERT:
All Richard Goode events for April 2008 have been cancelled due
to illness.)
Martha Strongin Katz will lead a viola master class at 4:30
p.m. Tuesday, April 8, in Regenstein Recital Hall. A founding
member of the Cleveland Quartet, Katz has performed more than
1,000 concerts with the group, including events at the White
House, the Grammy Awards and on NBC’s “Today Show.” Her
solo appearances have included Berlioz’s “Harold
in Italy” at Carnegie Hall, the Bartok Concerto with L’Orchestre
de la Suisse Romande, and recital and concerto performances at
the 1989 International Viola Congress. Admission to this master
class is free.
The U.S. Air Force Academy Band will perform at Pick-Staiger
Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9. As one of the Air
Force’s two premier bands, the Academy Band, conducted
by Lieutenant Colonel Larry H. Lang, presents regional and national
concert tours plus performances at the Air Force Academy, on
radio and television, and at national and international music
conferences. The band’s repertoire ranges from light classics
and traditional marches to current country, pop and Broadway
hits, as well as new arrangements of patriotic classics. Admission
is free, but this event is ticketed. General admission tickets
must be obtained by calling the Pick-Staiger box office at (847)
467-4000. There is a four-ticket limit per customer. All ticket
holders must be seated by 7:15 p.m.
Moscow-born guest violinist Ilya Kaler and pianist James Giles
will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 11, in Lutkin
Hall. Kaler has served on the faculties of the Eastman School
of Music and Indiana University and is currently professor of
violin at DePaul University. Giles, a School of Music faculty
member, has commissioned and premiered works by numerous contemporary
composers. The performance features sonatas by Beethoven, Strauss
and Saint-Saens, as well as virtuoso works by Ravel and Ysaye.
Tickets are $9 for the general public; $7 for senior citizens
and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $5 for students.
Guitarist Oscar Ghiglia returns to Northwestern for his 20th
consecutive year at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12, in Lutkin Hall,
as part of the 2007-08 Segovia Classical Guitar Series, sponsored
by the Northwestern University School of Music and the Chicago
Classical Guitar Society. Ghiglia’s program includes works
by Giuliani, Sor, Mompou and Ponce. Tickets are $19 for the general
public; $16 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and
staff; and $8 for students.
The 2007-08 Segovia Classical Guitar Series continues with a
performance by Raphaella Smits at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 26,
in Lutkin Hall. The Belgian guitarist is an enthusiastic proponent
of the eight-string guitar and also has developed a passion for
early instruments. Her program will feature works by Bach, Coste,
Sor and Mertz. Tickets are $19 for the general public; $16 for
senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $8 for
students.
Pianist Jeffrey Siegel will perform the final concert in his
2007-08 Keyboard Conversations Series during “Austria-Hungary
-- Captivating Continentals,” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May
2, in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. His “concert with commentary” will
feature Strauss waltzes, Liszt rhapsodies and works by Dvorak
and Bartok. Tickets are $23 for the general public; $21 for senior
citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $16 for students.
This season’s Segovia Classical Guitar Series will conclude
at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 4, in Lutkin Hall, with a concert by
the Waller and Maxwell Guitar Duo and Friends, “Music from
the Salons of Vienna and Paris.” Guitarists Anne Waller
and Mark Maxwell, duo-pianists Claire Aebersold and Ralph Neiweem
and flutists Richard and Emily Graef will perform opera arrangements
and chamber works typically heard in 19th century European salons.
The program features works by Beethoven, Rossini, Carulli, Giuliani,
Berlioz and Bizet performed on original instruments by Panormo,
Godfroy, Vissonaire, and Broadwood. Tickets are $19 for the general
public; $16 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and
staff; and $8 for students.
Philippe Cuper, principal clarinetist with the Paris Opera Orchestra,
will visit Northwestern University May 6 and 7. A member of the
Versailles Conservatoire faculty, Cuper has appeared at festivals
throughout the world with the Czech Philharmonic and the Bavarian
Radio Symphony Orchestra. Cuper will present a clarinet master
class at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, in Regenstein Recital Hall. Admission
to the master class is free. (Editors note: Cuper’s May

He will perform a recital in Lutkin Hall at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday,
