Klangverwaltung Munich Bavarian Orchestra to Perform at Northwestern University Oct. 24

EVANSTON, Ill. --- The Northwestern University School of Music will host a performance by the KlangVerwaltung Munich Bavarian Philharmonic Orchestra featuring guest piano soloist Orion Weiss, a 2002 winner of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant.

The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive, on Northwestern University’s Evanston campus.

The program will feature Mozart’s Overture to “Don Giovanni,” Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major (“Emperor”) and Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C Major (“Great”).

The KlangVerwaltung Munich makes its debut North American tour this month with performances throughout the United States. One of Europe’s most exciting young orchestras, the KlangVerwaltung was co-founded in 1997 by violinists Andreas Reiner and Josef Kröner with the goal of realizing the musical ideas of conductor Enoch zu Guttenberg.

This elite 70-member ensemble is comprised of musicians from leading orchestras and opera houses, including the Berlin and Munich Philharmonics, the Munich, Stuttgart, Hamburg and Hanover State Operas, the Salzburg Mozarteum, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Deutsche Oper am Rein. Based in Munich, the orchestra’s strengths include the oratorio repertoire, building on the partnership between Guttenberg and the Chorgemeinschaft Neubeuern, and the symphonic repertoire.

Considered an outstanding interpreter of the great oratorios and symphonies from baroque to late romanticism, Guttenberg possesses personal style that brings together elements of historical performance practice and modern and lively expressiveness. He has worked with the Symphony Orchestra of the Norddeutscher Rundfunk, the Mozarteum Orchestra, the Brno Philharmonic and Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, among others.

American pianist Weiss, guest soloist for the ensemble’s North American tour, at age 25, has established himself as an extraordinary talent who exhibits great maturity and depth bolstered by remarkable technical skills. His first recording for Yarlung Records is due to be released this fall.

Since his 1999 debut, Weiss has appeared with many leading North American orchestras, including the symphony orchestras of Houston, Minnesota, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Cleveland, Kansas City, the National Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 2005, he toured Israel with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Itzhak Perlman.

Ticket prices for the KlangVerwaltung Munich concert are $18 for general public; $15 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $10 for students with a valid ID.
