Northwestern to Host Fall Concerts by Guest
Artists and Faculty Recitals
EVANSTON, Ill. --- This fall Northwestern University will provide
an exceptional lineup of recitals by School of Music faculty
and concerts and lecture-demonstrations by renowned guest artists
and ensembles from around the world.
All of the following events will take place in venues on the
Evanston campus, including Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts
Circle Drive; Regenstein Recital Hall, 60 Arts Circle Drive;
or Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place, as noted below.
Guest pianist Jeffrey Siegel will present his first Keyboard
Conversations concert of Northwestern’s 2007-08 music season
at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Siegel’s “Fascinatin’ Rhythms” will
celebrate the American works of Gottschalk, Gershwin, Bernstein,
Copland and Joplin. Tickets are $23 for the general public; $21
for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $16
for full-time students.
The Adam Unsworth Ensemble will perform at Regenstein Recital
Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23. A former Philadelphia Orchestra
hornist (and former student of Northwestern University School
of Music faculty member Gail Williams), Unsworth was recently
named to the University of Michigan horn faculty. Unsworth has
won acclaim in both the classical and jazz worlds. The performance
will feature classical chamber music elements, lyrical creativity,
fluid arrangements and improvisational virtuosity. Tickets are
$7 for the general public; $5 for senior citizens and Northwestern
faculty and staff; and $4 for full-time students.
The KlangVerwaltung Munich Bavarian Philharmonic Orchestra will
perform with American pianist Orion Weiss at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday,
Oct. 24, at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Founded in 1997, the KlangVerwaltung
Munich orchestra has been hailed throughout Europe for its brilliant
interpretations of music from Mozart to Bruckner. Led by conductor
Enoch zu Guttenberg, the orchestra will be joined by 25-year-old
pianist Orion Weiss, a 2002 winner of the prestigious Avery Fisher
Career Grant. The performance will include Mozart’s Overture
to “Don Giovanni,” Beethoven’s Piano Concerto
No. 5 in E-flat Major (“Emperor”) and Schubert’s
Symphony No. 9 in C Major (“Great”). Tickets are
$18 for the general public; $15 for senior citizens and Northwestern
faculty and staff; and $10 for full-time students.
School of Music faculty member James Giles, assistant professor
of piano, will give a recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in
Lutkin Hall. Renowned for his performances in important musical
centers of America and Europe, Giles recently completed a tour
of China and performed at Warsaw’s Chopin Academy of Music.
His program will feature romantic character pieces by Chopin,
Liszt and Alkan, as well as Schubert’s Sonata in B-flat
Major. Tickets are $9 for the general public; $7 for senior citizens
and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $5 for full-time students.
Pick-Staiger Concert Hall will host the “Spiritual Sounds
of Central Asia: Nomads, Mystics and Troubadours” event
at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8. The lecture-demonstration is part
of a tour organized and produced by the Aga Khan Music Initiative
in Central Asia, and will include 18 musicians from six countries.
The program will feature the legendary Azerbaijani “mugham” singer
Alim Qasimov and his daughter Fergane, accompanied by a four-piece
ensemble including a tar (lute), kemanche (spike fiddle), balaban
(duduk or double-reed oboe) and percussion. (“Mugham” is
original improvisational classical folk music popular in Azerbaijan,
Iran and parts of the Caucasus and Central Asia.) Admission is
free.
Northwestern School of Music faculty members -- pianist Alan
Chow, clarinetist Steven Cohen and violinist Gerardo Ribeiro
-- will combine their talents for a recital at Pick-Staiger Concert
Hall at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15. Their program will include
works by Stamitz, Brouwer, Milhaud, Bartók and Schoenfield.
Tickets are $9 for the general public; $7 for senior citizens
and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $5 for full-time students.
“Fabulous French Fare,” guest pianist Jeffrey Siegel’s
second Keyboard Conversations concert this season, will be held
at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Siegel
will explore Debussy’s “Clair de lune,” Poulenc’s “Impromptus,” Saint-Saëns’ “Danse
macabre” and Ravel’s “Jeux d’eau.” Tickets
are $23 for the general public; $21 for senior citizens and Northwestern
faculty and staff; and $16 for full-time students.
La Cappella della Pietà de Turchini, an internationally
renowned Italian ensemble, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday,
Dec. 4, at Lutkin Hall. The ensemble, specializing in 17th and
18th century music, holds a residency at the Centro di Musica
Antica in Naples.
The program will feature a selection of baroque masterworks.
Tickets are $12 for the general public; $9 for senior citizens
and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $6 for full-time students.
