All of the following events will take place in venues on the Evanston campus, including Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive; Regenstein Recital Hall, 60 Arts Circle Drive; or Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place, as noted below.

Guest pianist Jeffrey Siegel will present his first Keyboard Conversations concert of Northwestern’s 2007-08 music season at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Siegel’s “Fascinatin’ Rhythms” will celebrate the American works of Gottschalk, Gershwin, Bernstein, Copland and Joplin. Tickets are $23 for the general public; $21 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $16 for full-time students.

The Adam Unsworth Ensemble will perform at Regenstein Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23. A former Philadelphia Orchestra hornist (and former student of Northwestern University School of Music faculty member Gail Williams), Unsworth was recently named to the University of Michigan horn faculty. Unsworth has won acclaim in both the classical and jazz worlds. The performance will feature classical chamber music elements, lyrical creativity, fluid arrangements and improvisational virtuosity. Tickets are $7 for the general public; $5 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $4 for full-time students.

The KlangVerwaltung Munich Bavarian Philharmonic Orchestra will perform with American pianist Orion Weiss at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Founded in 1997, the KlangVerwaltung Munich orchestra has been hailed throughout Europe for its brilliant interpretations of music from Mozart to Bruckner. Led by conductor Enoch zu Guttenberg, the orchestra will be joined by 25-year-old pianist Orion Weiss, a 2002 winner of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. The performance will include Mozart’s Overture to “Don Giovanni,” Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major (“Emperor”) and Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C Major (“Great”). Tickets are $18 for the general public; $15 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $10 for full-time students.

School of Music faculty member James Giles, assistant professor of piano, will give a recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in Lutkin Hall. Renowned for his performances in important musical centers of America and Europe, Giles recently completed a tour of China and performed at Warsaw’s Chopin Academy of Music. His program will feature romantic character pieces by Chopin, Liszt and Alkan, as well as Schubert’s Sonata in B-flat Major. Tickets are $9 for the general public; $7 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $5 for full-time students.

Pick-Staiger Concert Hall will host the “Spiritual Sounds of Central Asia: Nomads, Mystics and Troubadours” event at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8. The lecture-demonstration is part of a tour organized and produced by the Aga Khan Music Initiative in Central Asia, and will include 18 musicians from six countries. The program will feature the legendary Azerbaijani “mugham” singer Alim Qasimov and his daughter Fergane, accompanied by a four-piece ensemble including a tar (lute), kemanche (spike fiddle), balaban (duduk or double-reed oboe) and percussion. (“Mugham” is original improvisational classical folk music popular in Azerbaijan, Iran and parts of the Caucasus and Central Asia.) Admission is free.

Northwestern School of Music faculty members -- pianist Alan Chow, clarinetist Steven Cohen and violinist Gerardo Ribeiro -- will combine their talents for a recital at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15. Their program will include works by Stamitz, Brouwer, Milhaud, Bartók and Schoenfield. Tickets are $9 for the general public; $7 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $5 for full-time students.

“Fabulous French Fare,” guest pianist Jeffrey Siegel’s second Keyboard Conversations concert this season, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall.
