Summer 2007 Music Calendar
EVANSTON, Ill. --- The Northwestern University School of Music’s
Summer 2007 music highlights will include performances by Swedish
guest vibraphonist and composer Anders Astrand and Northwestern
percussion Professor Michael Burritt (July 16). Burritt also will
perform with guest Polish percussion virtuoso Marta Klimasara,
winner of the 1999 World Marimba Competition and the 2001 Munich
Solo Competition and the Northwestern University Percussion Ensemble
(July 19).
Beginning in late June the National High School Music Institute
(NHSMI), an integral part of the School of Music, will offer
students interested in music careers the opportunity to work
with Northwestern University music faculty. These outstanding
young musicians will perform throughout the summer as soloists
and in large and small ensembles. More information on the NHSMI
summer events is featured below.
The following music events will be held on Northwestern’s
Evanston campus at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle
Drive; Regenstein Recital Hall, 60 Arts Circle Drive; and Lutkin
Hall, 700 University Place, as noted below.

JUNE 2007
Illinois Brass Band, 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, Pick-Staiger
Concert Hall. Ryan Nelson will be conducting an evening of brass
band music. Tickets are $6 for the general public; $4 for senior
citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3 for students.
NHSMI Faculty Musicale, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 28, Pick-Staiger
Concert Hall. Admission is free.
JULY 2007
Northwestern University Summer Orchestra, 7:30 p.m. Friday,
July 6, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Robert G. Hasty will conduct
the Northwestern University Summer Orchestra in a classical concert.
Featuring violinist Tracy Figard and violist Kristin Figard,
the program will include Carl Stamitz’s “Sinfonia
Concertante in D Major” and Jean Sibelius’ “Symphony
No. 1 in E Minor.” Tickets are $6 for the general public;
$4 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and
$3 for students.
NHSMI Guitar Recital, 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 6, Lutkin Hall.
Admission is free.
NHSMI Choir, Wind Ensemble and Orchestra, 7:30 p.m. Saturday,
July 7, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Mary Alice Stollak, Daniel
J. Farris, and Phil Peters will conduct NHSMI’s choir,
wind ensemble and orchestra. Choral works will include W.A. Mozart’s “Regina
Coeli,” Gabriel Fauré’s “Cantique de
Jean Racine” and Samuel Barber’s “Sure on This
Shining Night.” The wind ensemble will perform Eric Whitacre’s “Sleep” and
Fisher Tull’s “Sketches on a Tudor Psalm.” The
orchestra will perform George Bizet’s “Carmen Suite
No. 1” and Antonin Dvo?ák’s “Romance.” Admission
is free.
NHSMI Solo and Chamber Music Recital, 3 p.m. Sunday, July 8,
Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.
NHSMI String Faculty Recital, 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 9, Lutkin
Hall. This event will showcase the string faculty of NHSMI. The
program will feature pianist Kuang-Hao Huang, violinist Blair
Milton and cellist Jonathan Pegis. Musical works will include
Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Piano Trio in B-flat Major” (“Archduke”)
and other works. Admission is free.
Summer Band, 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, Pick-Staiger Concert
Hall. Daniel J. Farris and Ryan Nelson will conduct this band
concert. Tickets are $6 for the general public; $4 for senior
citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3 for students.
NHSMI Honors Solo and Chamber Music Recital, 7:30 p.m. Saturday
July 14, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Admission is free.
NHSMI Solo and Chamber Music Recital, 3 p.m. Sunday, July 15,
Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.
Michael Burritt, percussion, 7 p.m. Monday, July 16, Regenstein
Recital Hall. Assisted by Swedish guest vibraphonist and composer
Anders Astrand, Northwestern University percussion Professor
Michael Burritt will perform compositions of his own as well
as music by Astrand, Bach and Vinao. Admission is free.
NHSMI Ravinia Steans Institute Chamber Concert, 7:30 p.m. Monday,
July 16, Lutkin Hall. Each summer the Ravinia Festival’s
Steans Institute invites young artists from around the world
to study with its stellar faculty. In cooperation with Northwestern’s
National High School Music Institute, the Steans Institute brings
several of these budding virtuosos to perform at Northwestern.
Admission is free.
North Shore Concert Band, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, Pick-Staiger
Concert Hall. Daniel J. Farris will conduct the North Shore Concert
Band during an evening of band classics and march favorites.
Tickets are $6 for the general public; $4 for senior citizens
and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3 for students.
Michael Burritt, percussion and Marta Klimasara, marimba, 7
p.m. Thursday, July 19, Regenstein Recital Hall. Polish percussion
virtuoso Marta Klimasara, winner of the 1999 World Marimba Competition
and the 2001 Munich Solo Competition, will join Northwestern
University faculty percussionist Michael Burritt and the Northwestern
University Percussion Ensemble in a program featuring music by
Miki, Sammut and Xenakis. Admission is free.
Northwestern University Summer Jazz Ensemble and NHSMI Jazz
Combos, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 19, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall.
Joel Spencer will conduct a program featuring the Summer Jazz
Ensemble performing music by Count Basie and Thad Jones. The
concert will feature NHSMI jazz combos and tenor saxophonist
John Wojciechowski of the Northwestern jazz faculty. Tickets
are $6 for the general public; $4 for senior citizens and Northwestern
faculty and staff; and $3 for students.
NHSMI Honors Chamber and Wind Ensembles, 7:30 p.m. Saturday
July 21, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. This program will include
Malcolm Arnold’s “Four Scottish Dances” and
Donald Grantham’s “Baron Cimetière’s
Mambo.” Admission is free.
NHSMI Solo and Chamber Music Recital, 1 p.m. Sunday, July 22,
Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.
NHSMI Honors Solo Recital, 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 23, Lutkin
Hall. Admission is free.
Charles Vernon, bass trombone, 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, Regenstein
Recital Hall. Northwestern trombone Professor Charles Vernon
will play the alto, tenor and bass trombones with piano accompaniment
by Eric Ewazen, Robert Spillman, Gunnar de Frumerie, Jon Sandstrom,
Christian Lindberg and others. Admission is free.
Northwestern University Summer Orchestra and Summer Chorus,
7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Robert
G. Hasty and Robert A. Harris will conduct the orchestra in a
performance of Weber’s “Euryanthe Overature” and
Hindemith’s “Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by
Carl Maria von Weber.” The chorus will celebrate American
choral music with a retrospective of 20th century classics and
newer works. Tickets are $6 for the general public; $4 for senior
citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3 for students.
NHSMI Evening of Strings, 7:30 Tuesday, July 24, Lutkin Hall.
Admission is free.
NHSMI Voice Recital, 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, Lutkin Hall.

Summer Band, 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, Pick-Staiger Concert
Hall. Mallory Thompson will conduct a program featuring saxophonist
Kelli Pence. Works will include Travis J. Cross’ “Short
Essay,” Gordon Jacob’s “William Byrd Suite,” Aaron
Copland’s “Down a Country Lane,” Charles Ives’ “Old
Home Days,” Eric Whitacre’s “Sleep,” Samuel
Barber’s “Commando March,” the United States
Armed Forces “Salute” and E.E. Bagley’s “National
Emblem March.” Tickets are $6 for the general public; $4
for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3
for students.
NHSMI Piano Recital, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, Lutkin Hall.

NHSMI Composition Recital, 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 26, Pick-Staiger

NHSMI Gala Finale, 2 p.m. Friday, July 27, Pick-Staiger Concert
Hall. Mary Alice Stollak, Daniel J. Farris, and Phil Peters will
conduct the NHSMI participants in an evening of choral, wind
and orchestral music. The choir will perform Gallus Zeiler’s “Magnificat,” Johannes
Brahms’ “May Night” and David Dickau’s “If
Music Be the Food of Love.” The wind ensemble will perform
Michael Daugherty’s “Niagara Falls,” and the
orchestra will perform Jean Sibelius’ Finale from Symphony
No. 2. Admission is free.
