School of Music to Present Music Cognition Symposium
October 20
EVANSTON -- The School of Music presents the day long symposium,
Meyerfest: A 50th Anniversary Celebration of Leonard B.
Meyer’s “Emotion and Meaning in Music” on
Friday, October 20, in Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place, beginning
at 9:00 a.m. Meyer’s book, a landmark in the field
of music cognition, represented in 1956 a bold attempt to connect
music theory and music aesthetics with psychology and neuroscience. It
has since become an all-time best seller among academic books
on music.
Conceived to examine the impact of Meyer’s book and to
share with non-specialists the current research in music cognition,
the Meyerfest symposium features seven of the world's foremost
scholars in music cognition, neuroscience, psychology, and music
theory. They will present their research on music listening,
development, music and language, and the neuroscience of music.
The symposium is hosted by Northwestern University’s School
of Music, Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities,
the Cognitive Science Program, and Alumnae of Northwestern University. It
is free of charge and open to the public.
