Northwestern University Plans Feb. 14 Memorial Concert
for Bill Karlins
EVANSTON, Ill. --- Members of the Contemporary Music Ensemble
and other musicians will gather at Northwestern University’s
Pick-Staiger Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, for
a tribute to the late M. William “Bill” Karlins,
who was a faculty member of the University’s School of
Music for nearly 35 years.
Mr. Karlins joined Northwestern’s composition faculty
in 1967 and taught in that department until his retirement in
2001. He was a versatile composer whose output ranged from large
orchestral and chamber works to solo and choral pieces. Karlins
created works commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra,
the American Chamber Symphony and the National Endowment for
the Arts.
Joining Northwestern’s Contemporary Music Ensemble for
this special memorial will be the Chicago Saxophone Quartet;
alumnus, Indiana State University Music Professor and saxophonist
Paul Bro; and School of Music faculty members who include flutist
Walfrid Kujala, pianist Elizabeth Buccheri and conductor Ryan
Nelson.
Pick-Staiger Concert Hall is located at 50 Arts Circle Drive,
Evanston campus.
Concert tickets are $8.50 for the general public, $7 for senior
citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff, and $4 for students.
