Guest Artist Marvin Stamm to Perform During Jazz Combofest
Feb. 18 and 19
EVANSTON, Ill. --- Described as "a musician's musician" by
jazz critics, guest trumpet soloist Marvin Stamm will perform
with Northwestern University jazz combos at 7:30 p.m. Saturday,
Feb. 18, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at Regenstein Recital Hall,
60 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston campus.
Stamm's career began in 1961 when he joined Stan Kenton's orchestra
as the trumpet soloist. He later toured with Woody Herman. Stamm
gained recognition playing with well-known artists who included
Frank Sinatra and the Benny Goodman Sextet, and began to garner
praise for both the art and the craft of trumpet playing. Stamm's
career matured as he recorded his debut album, "Machinations," and
began to collaborate with luminaries such as Swedish pianist
Stefan Karlsson, drummer Ed Soph and pianist Bill Mays. His album "Stammpede," released
in 1982, heralded his rededication to a solo jazz career. Since
then, he has released six other albums, some solo and some in
collaboration with such jazz greats as Mays, Soph and tenor saxophonist
Bob Mintzer. Stamm also has recorded with Bill Evans, Quincy
Jones, Wes Montgomery and George Winston.
Stamm, who resides in New York, also shapes the education of
tomorrow's musicians. His involvement in jazz education takes
him to universities and high schools across the United States
and abroad as a performer, clinician and mentor.
During the Feb. 18 and 19 Jazz Combofest concerts, Stamm will
be joined by Northwestern's jazz combos, coordinated by School
of Music faculty member Joel Spencer. Tickets are $6.50 for the
general public; $4.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty
and staff; and $3.50 for students. To order tickets or for more
information, call the Pick-Staiger Ticket Office at 847-491-5441.
