Instrumental music specialist. Instructor and coordinator of string education and pedagogy. James Kjelland is active as a conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and consultant. He is a contributor to Teaching Stringed Instruments: A Course of Study, Strictly Strings, The Science and Psychology of Music Performance, and Teaching Music Through Performance in Orchestra. Kjellland is also the author of Orchestral Bowing: Style & Function and numerous journal articles on string pedagogy in The American String Teacher, The Instrumentalist, and Council for Research in Music Education. A member of the American String Teachers Association, Music Educators National Conference, and Pi Kappa Lambda, he is was formerly on the faculties of the University of Southern California, R. D. Colburn School of Performing Arts, and University of North Texas.
