Title:  Lecture: Composing Native American Music
Description: Lecture I in Music Education for the 21st Century: Intersections of Music and Culture Led by ethnomusicologist Bruno Nettl Bruno Nettle was born in Prague, received his Ph. D. at Indiana University, and spent most of his career teaching at the University of Illinois, where he is now professor emeritus of music and anthropology. His lecture concerns the ways in which traditional Native American songs are composed, taught, and learned, as well as the Native American concepts of music creation and learning. Nettl will present songs for analysis and discuss the Northern Plains peoples' ideas of how songs come into existence, drawing on his own experience with their culture - in particular, with the Blackfoot tribe of Montana. Through this discussion, participants will gain a better understanding of the sound and structure of Native American music. The lecture will conclude with a brief history of one song.

Title:  Small Jazz Ensemble Concert: The Music of Richard Rodgers
Description: Victor Goines, conductor Richard Rodgers was one of the most successful and celebrated composers of the 20th century, writing music for more than 900 songs and for 43 Broadway musicals. His partnerships with lyricists Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II resulted in dozens of hit musicals for the stage and screen. Between 1920 and 1943 Rodgers and Hart wrote dozens of scores for Broadway and Hollywood, including The Boys from Syracuse and Pal Joey. In 1943 Rodgers teamed with Hammerstein to write Oklahoma!, a box office smash and a landmark in musical theater history. Rodgers and Hammerstein went on to write the classic musicals Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music, all of which were adapted for film. Such Rodgers songs as "My Funny Valentine" and "The Lady Is a Tramp" have become jazz standards.

Title:  Teaching Music from Diverse Cultures: A Quest for Integrity
Description: Lecture III in Music Education for the 21st Century: Intersections of Music and Culture Led by Dr. Mary Goetze Dr. Mary Goetze has long believed that performing music from diverse musical traditions can be a powerful way to gain insights into different cultures. This belief led her on a twelve-year quest to bring music from around the world to life for students at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. She invited musicians from a wide variety of cultures to teach songs to her students, and she traveled widely, recording songs on video, later recreating them with her IU vocal ensemble. In seeking to honor diverse cultural practices, she broke with Western vocal and methodological practices, coaching the singers to approximate the way songs are learned and sung within their culture of origin. Out of this experience came a series of DVDs created for use in classrooms and choirs. In this discussion, Dr. Goetze shares the lessons she learned about music, teaching, cultural explorations, and the impact these experiences had upon her students.
