Music Cognition Colloquium: Audible Evolution in Prosimian Primates
Description: Chris Mercer will discuss his research on prosimian primate vocal communication, focusing on the role of Darwinian processes in shaping both the function and morphology of lemur calls. Comparison of evidence from molecular and vocal communication data indicates that call analysis is highly effective in determining relationships among species. The phylogeny of the lemuridae is partially encoded in their calls, and I will attempt to demonstrate the audibility of lemur phylogenetic relationships. The talk will include photos, videos, and some of the many audio recordings Mercer has made in his research at the Duke University Lemur Center. Since his compositional work is an attempt to explicate and speculate on these issues, he will also include a few musical examples.

Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus: Verdi Requiem
Description: Victor Yampolsky, conductor; Robert A. Harris, chorus master; Diane Alexander, soprano; Janine Hawley, mezzo-soprano; Richard Drews, tenor; Gustav Andreassen, bass.
The Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi is a musical setting of the Catholic funeral Mass. It was completed to mark the first anniversary of the death of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian poet and novelist much admired by Verdi. The piece is also sometimes referred to as the Manzoni Requiem. Throughout the work, Verdi uses vigorous rhythms, sublime melodies, and dramatic contrasts much as he did in his operas to express the powerful emotions engendered by the text.
