Title:  University Chorale: 70th Annual Christmas Concert - Handel's Messiah
Description:  Robert A. Harris, conductor; members of Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra The most famous oratorio ever written, Messiah was largely composed over a three-week period in 1741 and was first performed in Dublin on April 13, 1742. The work is a meditation on the idea of the Messiah, and thus some of the text is derived from the Old (rather than the New) Testament, including the Psalms. Later parts of the oratorio then offer episodes dealing with Christ's birth, suffering, death, and resurrection.

Description: Eliot Fisk is recognized worldwide for his groundbreaking transcriptions of baroque and classical works as well as his generosity in bringing music to schools, hospitals, prisons, and other unconventional venues. Many of his recordings for labels such as DGG, Arabesque, and EMI have made the Billboard charts as bestsellers, and in 2006 he was awarded the Cruz de Isabel la Católica by King Juan Carlos of Spain for his service to the cause of Spanish music. Title:  Small Jazz Ensemble Concert: The Music of Richard Rodgers
Description: Victor Goines, conductor Richard Rodgers was one of the most successful and celebrated composers of the 20th century, writing music for more than 900 songs and for 43 Broadway musicals. His partnerships with lyricists Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II resulted in dozens of hit musicals for the stage and screen. Between 1920 and 1943 Rodgers and Hart wrote dozens of scores for Broadway and Hollywood, including The Boys from Syracuse and Pal Joey. In 1943 Rodgers teamed with Hammerstein to write Oklahoma!, a box office smash and a landmark in musical theater history. Rodgers and Hammerstein went on to write the classic musicals Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music, all of which were adapted for film. Such Rodgers songs as "My Funny Valentine" and "The Lady Is a Tramp" have become jazz standards.
