Courses for Undergraduates

2012 Undergraduate Level Music Classes

Theory VI
MUS THRY 211-3 Sec 20

Instructor: Robert Reinhart

  • 6 weeks
  • June 18 - July 27
  • MWF 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
  • Evanston Campus

As a continuation of Music 211-2, this course is designed to build upon one’s knowledge of the theory and analysis of common-practice tonal music in order to understand the music following it (ca. 1890-2011). Tonality’s breakdown/transformation along with growing interest in vastly different methods of musical organization resulted in a myriad of styles in contemporary music. This course will serve to recontextualize familiar analytical methods and explore new ones, simultaneously developing an understanding of quasi-universal versus stylistically specific methods of approaching this literature. Prerequisites: Music 211-2 or consent of instructor.

Aural Skills VI
MUS THRY 226-3 Sec 20
Instructor: Robert Reinhart

  • 6 weeks
  • June 18 - July 27
  • MWF 12 noon - 2:00 p.m.
  • Evanston Campus

As a continuation of Music 226-2, this course is similarly designed to develop one’s abilities to transfer musical information among mental, physical, auditory and visual forms. Although the activities in this course are designed to build upon one’s previous knowledge of tonal music, many of these skills will be expanded upon in order both to adjust to new contexts and to illustrate the interrelatedness of a wide variety of musical styles. Activities will include dictation, analysis, audiating, sight-singing, error detection, performance and strategizing.
