Pablo Chin (cello), a third-year graduate student, has
been commissioned to write a new piece for the Freiburg-based
Ensemble Recherche. They are one of the two or three leading
new music ensembles worldwide. They will perform his piece together
with other "American" composers,
ranging from Ives to Cage to Ferneyhough.
Dylan Frank (percussion) is one of four finalists
of the Multiple Solo Percussion Competition of Percussive Arts
Society this year. The finalists will compete at the Percussive
Arts Society International Competition. The contest awards a
total of $5,000 in cash for finalists. Dylan will also receive
a matching grant from the Bienen School percussion program.
Shawn Jaeger (composition) received a 2009
Morton Gould Young Composer Award, bestowed by the ASCAP Foundation.
The award grants cash prizes to young concert music composers
up to 30 years of age whose works are selected through a juried
national competition. Shawn was also awarded the 2009 M. William
Karlins Award for his composition "In Old Virginny" for
soprano and doublebass.
Peter Martin (percussion) was appointed
as tenure-track assistant professor of percussion at Virginia
Commonwealth University.
Andrew Nogal (oboe), a first-year masters student
specializing in contemporary performance, was invited to perform
at the Ojai (CA) Music Festival in June. This year, the members
of Grammy-winning chamber ensemble eighth blackbird serve as
the festival's music directors.
Carolyn O'Brien (composition) was awarded the
2009 Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts
and Letters. Each year, the Academy honors over 50 composers, artists,
architects, and writers with cash awards ranging from $2500 to
$75,000. Carolyn's music has been performed by Bent Frequency,
Empyrean Ensemble, International Contemporary Ensemble, Left
Coast Ensemble, New York New Music Ensemble, and Trio Phonos,
directed by Harry Sparnaay. She was awarded second place in the
SCI/ASCAP Student Composition Competition, the Libby Larsen Prize
through International Alliance for Women in Music, and a commission
and position as composer in residence at the San Francisco Community
Music Center through
the American Composers Forum for the 21st Century Music for The
People project.
Deanna Talens (cello) was the grand prize winner
of the 2009 National ASTA National Solo Competition.
Rodolfo Vieira (violin) performed at the BOZAR,
the Centre for Fine Arts in Belgium after being selected for
European Union's forum "Europe's Creative Regions and Cities
100 Young Talents" in Brussels in April.
Noah Zeldin (cello) has been awarded a Fellowship
by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to study two terms
in Tubingen, Germany.
