2000s

Stephanie Michelle Feder (00) served as assistant director of the San Francisco Bach Choir from 2001-2003 before moving to Italy. Since returning to the United States and completing an MFA in Conducting at the University of California Irvine, she has been teaching as a guest instructor and writing curriculum with colleagues in UCI's Center for Learning Through the Arts for a large grant project sponsored by National Geographic. In addition to teaching, she also serves as artistic director of the San Clemente Choral Society, director of music at St. Andrew's By the Sea United Methodist Church in San Clemente, and director of choirs at Congregation Shir Ha'ma'alot in Irvine, Stephanie has been a soprano soloist with the Orange County Women's Chorus since 2006.

Jade Simmons (01) has released a new CD, Revolutionary Rhythms (Koch International Classics). The CD is a collaboration between Jade and fellow alumnus Jonathan Sanford (00).

Matthew Coley (G03) has recently accepted the Professor of Music in Percussion position at Iowa State University in Ames for the 2009-2010 acedemic year.

Rohan Patel (03) was named director of advance for the Secretary of Agriculture in the US Department of Agriculture.

Donovan Seidle (G03) made his debut appearance at Carnegie Hall on April 15 playing violin in the YouTube Symphony Orchestra project, whereby 90 classical musicians won spots on the orchestra by posting videos of themselves on YouTube and then being voted on by viewers.

Jonathon Struve (G05) is a PhD candidate in vocal literature at the University of Iowa. He serves as alumni guest lecturer in voice at Luther College in Decorah, IA. He recently appeared in recital at the Noble Recital Hall at Luther College, performing an English song recital featuring works of Britten, Quilter, and Somervell.

Sandra del Cid (G06) won the position of second flute/piccolo in the Orlando Philharmonic last year. In 2009 she will be performing Haydn's Concerto no. 2 with principal flutist Colleen Blagov for Lire Organizzate in the OPO's Focus Series. In addition to performing in Orlando, she is performing as guest principal with the Brevard Symphony Orchestra in Melbourne, FL.Vachislev Dinerchtein

Viacheslav Dincerchtein (G08) was a guest recitalist at the International Viola Congress in South Africa in August 2009.

Kevin Hakes (G08) won the bass trombone position with the Orquestra Sinfonica Portuguesa in Lisbon in September. Earlier this summer, he was awarded the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) scholarship for advanced  studies for up to two years with the renowned bass trombonist of the Berlin Philharmonic, Stefan Schulz.

Josh Moshier (08), Michael Lebrun (07), Robert Meier (07), and Max Krucoff (07), performing as Josh Moshier and Moshier/Lebrun Collective, received a grant through Chamber Music America's "New Jazz Works: Commissioning and Ensemble Development" program. They received the honor for a work inspired by Studs Terkel’s memoir Touch and Go. The work will be scored for tenor saxophone, piano, guitar, bass, and drum set.

Brian Hecht (G09) recently became the bass trombonist with the US Navy Band.

1990s

Thomas Goetz (G90) has been appointed director of music and arts at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach, Florida, where he is also the church organist, and directs a full music program of choirs for all ages. Goetz continues to present seminars and organ recitals for professional organizations, including a seminar for the Region V Convention of the American Guild of Organists in Detroit on June 29. He is on the Seminary and Denominational Relations Committee of the American Guild of Organists, based in New York city, and is active in the Vero Beach chapter of the AGO.Robert Fallon

Robert Fallon (91) is assistant professor of musicology at Carnegie Mellon University.

Michael Stepniak (G95) was appointed dean of Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, VA. He was previously the associate dean of performing arts at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY.

Eun-Joo Kwak (G96) was a guest soloist with the KBS Symphony Orchestra of Korea in 2008. The concert took place at the Seoul Arts Center in South Korea. Earlier that year, Kwak traveled to the Czech Republic to judge the International Smetana Piano Competition in Pilsen. She also judged the first round of the PianoARts National Competition and Festival in Milwaukee. Eun-Joo is associate professor of piano at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, and lives in Fox Point with her composer husband Dr. James Crowley (G93) and their daughter Annabelle.

Bernhard Scully Bernhard Scully (99) was awarded a McKnight Artist Fellowship for Performing Musicians. The prize, administered by the MacPhail Center for Music, recognizes and provides support for mid-career performing musicians. Bernhard is the first horn player and the first classical brass applicant to win the award.

1980s

James Caldwell (G81, G84), professor of music composition and theory at Western Illinois University's School of Music for 22 years, presented the university's 2009 Distinguished Faculty Lecture on "space" as it relates to music in March.

Dennis M. Layendecker (G81) retired this summer after 20 years of service as commander and music director of the United States Air Force Band.

William Jastrow (G84) was one of seven teachers nationwide to receive a Teaching Music Award for excellence in and contributions to music education from the National Association for Music Education (MENC). He is currently the Assistant Fine Arts Department Chair at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, IL.

Augusta Read Thomas (87) was inducted to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in May. The Academy is an honor society of 250 architects, composers, artists, and writers. The honor of election is considered the highest formal recognition of artistic merit in the United States. She is currently serving as the director of contemporary music for the Tanglewood Festival.

Patricia Oeste (G89) Patricia Oeste was named a Yale Distinguished Music Educator for 2009. She also received the prestigious Kennedy Center Teacher Fellowship for 2009 and was invited to spend one month in Washington, D.C., pursuing artistic and professional development of her choosing.

1960s

C.B. Wilson (60, G61), associate provost for academic personnel at West Virginia University, was the recipient of the 2009 Neil S. Bucklew Award for Social Justice.

Vincent Skowronski (66, G68) performed two of Dvo?ák’s four Romantic Pieces as arranged for violin and piano in a live performance on Indiana University’s radio station, WFIU. The performance was broadcast live on the Internet. Vincent was accompanied by Saori Chiba on the piano.

1950s

Wanda Yi Paik (55, G57) presented a solo piano recital of music by Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, and Dohnanyi to benefit the Wayside Inn Cultural Fund in Sudbury, MA, last May. Wanda Paik teaches piano at Regis College in Weston, MA, and also in her private studio at Lincoln, MA. She is a past president of the New England Piano Teachers' Association. She has performed with the Boston Pops under Arthur Fiedler and Erich Kunzel, and with other orchestras and venues in the Boston area.

Grace Bumbry Grace Bumbry (x58) has been named a 2009 Kennedy Center honoree for her prestigious opera career. For more information, visit the Kennedy Center web page on the 32nd Kennedy Center Honors.
